Twin Z vs My Brest Friend Twin: Which Twin Breastfeeding Pillow Is Best?

Twin Nursing Pillow: Which twin breastfeeding pillow should you choose?

A big concern of mine during my twin pregnancy was how am I going to nurse two babies?  (After the question of should I breastfeed my twins? That was a yes, as long as I was able.)

I had successfully nursed one baby with Ben, but tandem feeding was a bit intimidating. How do you hold twins plus feed them at the same time?

I didn’t use a nursing pillow with Ben, but every other twin mom told me that a supportive nursing pillow is key to successful twin feeding, regardless of what other breastfeeding twin techniques you use.  But which one to choose?

If you’ve spent any time in twin Facebook groups you know there is a big debate about which nursing pillow. Do you go with the Twin Z Breastfeeding Pillow or the My Brest Friend Twin Nursing Pillow?

Which pillow offers up more options in terms of breastfeeding newborn twins positions?

Here is the direct comparison of My Brest Friend vs Twin Z Pillow.

Twin Nursing Pillow: My Brest Friend vs Twin Z

A good nursing pillow can make a big difference in a twin mom’s nursing journey.  It is something that requires a little bit of research and thought.  I hated using pillows with Ben.  I didn’t need them and they just got in the way with one baby.

With Ali and Sammy, I had double the babies and needed more support.  Having a good pillow really helped, and we made it 15 months exclusively breastfeeding.

Twin Nursing Pillow Needs

So which twin breastfeeding pillow should you get? I started researching this months before Ali and Sammy were due. The first thing I did was ask what other twin moms used.

It felt like there was a pretty even split between the twin nursing pillows, along with some moms who didn’t use a twin pillow. Every mother will have her own preferences when it comes to breastfeeding, but a few main points came up in discussions on this.

Support

How supportive is the pillow? When you are feeding two babies at one time your hands are full. (Yes, sometimes that annoying phrase ‘You have your hands full’ is true!) So you need something that supports your babies without you having to hold too tightly to them.

Versatility

Do you want your pillow to do anything besides be a twin feeding pillow? A regular boppy nursing pillow, for example, can be used for other purposes with your twins. Having a multipurpose item could be helpful.

(Learn what supplies you need for pumping if you take that route—> Supplies for Successful Pumping)

Cost

Twins are not cheap. Nor are the things you need to buy for them. So it makes sense that cost is a real factor here.

If a product is good enough that I use it a lot, I don’t mind spending a little more money. This is especially true when it comes to something as important as nursing twins. My goal was to breastfeed for at least a year, a significant amount of time to get value out of a deluxe nursing pillow.

But, being real here, there was the chance that breastfeeding wouldn’t work. Would I be wasting my money?

Comfort

Yes, your comfort as a mom matters for this too.  You will be spending a lot of time nursing, so it just makes sense for a pillow to be comfortable for you as well as your babies.  What would you like in a comfortable nursing pillow for twins?

What is the Best Twin Nursing Pillow?

So which pillow is best?  I’ve done the research and talked to a ton of twin moms about just this.  Here are the pros and cons of each of the two major pillows.

My Brest Friend Twin Nursing Pillow

The My Brest Friend Twin Nursing Pillow is one large pillow that clips around your waist, kind of like a donut fanny pack.  It has sturdy foam filling and you place both babies on the pillow to nurse.  It has a removable cover you can wash.  There is a back support piece that is detachable for added comfort.

Pros

This pillow is really sturdy, meaning it won’t sag or bend under the weight of your twins, even as they get older.

It slants slightly towards the wearer, which gives an extra level of safety because your babies can’t roll off easily.  This creates a snuggly place for you to cuddle with both twins at the same time, which can be helpful when doing skin to skin with both babies.

Since it latches to you it is easy to get into place and then work on getting your babies into place to nurse.

It creates a hands-free nursing environment.  Once your babies are big enough to latch and stay latched on their own you really don’t need to be very hands-on with them, a big plus if you have other children at home too.

Cons

This pillow is really designed just for nursing.  It is too large and just not really shaped for tummy time.

Since this is just one pillow it can’t really be used to rest your twins in at other times.

It is bulky.  It is sturdy as I said, so it can’t be squished down like some other pillows.  This makes it a bit of a hindrance to take outside of the home.

Twin Z Breastfeeding Pillow

The Twin Z pillow looks more like 2 traditional boppies put together.  It has unique sections for each twin with a divider between them.  This divider goes behind you to nurse while the two free ends connect in front for your twins to lay on.  It has washable covers that can be removed as well.

Pros

The biggest pro of the Twin Z is that is can be used in multiple ways.  It is on the softer side, making it better for tummy time and as a resting spot for your babies. The different sections make it easier to prop both babies up without them falling into each other.

The Twin Z can be used for bottle feeding.  Both babies can be fully supported while you are hands-free to feed them.

This pillow offers a large back support while nursing, and it does latch into place so you don’t have to worry about it shifting while nursing.

Cons

This pillow is not as solid of a pillow, it requires a little bit more effort to keep your babies in place while nursing.

Some women find the back support to be too big and it cannot be removed.

This is the more expensive choice between the two pillows.

How To Choose Your Ideal Nursing Pillow

So how do you decide which pillow is best for you?

Try Both Out

If you have a friend with twins or have already joined a twin moms group (which you totally should do!), you can ask to try on the My Brest Friend nursing pillow and/or the Twin Z nursing pillow.  Even trying on one can be helpful.

Ask at your local La Leche League or ask a lactation consultant at your hospital if they have opinions.  They see a lot of moms breastfeeding and can have some interesting insight.  If you need to talk to someone with more twin experience, there are tips on the La Leche website just for twin moms.

Talk To Other Twin Moms

The best source of information on all things twin is your fellow twin moms.  Reach out to any friends who have twins and for sure take advantage of Facebook groups and twin mom groups.  Twin moms will tell you which pillow they liked best.

The Basic Conclusion?

As I said, I’ve talked to a lot of twin moms and read a lot of reviews on both of these products.  It seems to come down to one main thing.

The My Brest Friend Twin Pillow is best for nursing, while the Twin Z Nursing Pillow is best for bottle feeding.

If you know you want to go one way or the other, take that into account.  I know it can be hard to know for sure you will be able to breastfeed twins despite wanting to.

If possible you could try to borrow a pillow until you know for sure how you will be feeding your twins, or try to find a pillow for sale in your local twin group.

My Recommendations

Here is my personal opinion.  I breastfed Ali and Sammy for 15 months.  We used the My Brest Friend every time we tandem fed, which was basically every feeding after the first few weeks.

I absolutely loved it and found it to be very helpful throughout our tandem nursing journey.  I cannot recommend it enough.

As I said, it isn’t multipurpose like the Twin Z.  Ali and Sammy were my second (and third) children, so we already had boppies for tummy time and just lounging in.

If you know you are going to just bottle feed, I would just get two boppies.  They are cheaper and do the same thing as the Twin Z in terms of non-breastfeeding uses.

If you are going to do both, bottle and breast, the Twin Z might be a good idea.  It is much more versatile and it is just one pillow to worry about as opposed to two boppies or other singleton nursing pillows.

If you are going to exclusively breastfeed the My Brest Friend is the way to go.

Conclusion

Every mom will have her own opinion and recommendation for nursing pillows.  I found from my research that the general consensus was that the My Brest Friend is better for nursing and the Twin Z is better for bottle feeding.

I highly recommend trying to see your options in real life is possible.  Try one or both on and see which is most comfortable for you.  I also recommend you consider buying whatever pillow you get used.  Check your local twin group for that.

Whichever pillow and feeding method you go with, remember what matters most is that you are doing your best for your babies, for you, and for your whole family.  There is not one right way to do that.

You’ll nail this twin thing, Mama.
